A good friend is director of a multinational hotel that has been sold and is agonizing over\u00a0starting up her own business or waiting for another hotel. With excellent training and\u00a0experience, a large network of contacts and no financial constraints what is holding her back?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The main problem seems to be fear of starting something new.<\/strong> It is a lot different from an\u00a0established business where there are staff, contacts and contracts in place for all of the varied\u00a0tasks required for the day to day running of the enterprise. There is nearly always someone to\u00a0fall back on for advice or assistance in difficult situations.<\/p>\n

So why start your own business?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first reason that comes to mind is being ones\u2019 own boss<\/strong> \u2013 having the freedom to do the\u00a0things the way you want and take all the credit for their success.<\/p>\n

Then linked with this is the chance to build something that is yours,<\/strong> especially significant\u00a0after having put your heart into working for a multinational that has decided on a change of\u00a0course.<\/p>\n

Then it is having the freedom to work when you want,<\/strong> without a constraining boss\u00a0who doesn\u2019t understand the concept of \u2018flexible hours\u2019 or the creative power of a walk on the\u00a0beach or through the woods.<\/p>\n

What is the catch?\u00a0Why do most of the businesses fail in the first 2-3 years?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It would really be wonderful if we could turn our ideas into businesses quickly and easily, but\u00a0that is seldom the way things happen.
\nIt takes time, planning, money and enthusiasm<\/strong> (not to mention blood, sweat and tears) to get\u00a0an enterprise going.<\/p>\n

Depending on your background you may need help especially from experienced financial,\u00a0marketing and sales people<\/strong> \u2013 someone who has already been through the process and that\u00a0will save you time and a lot of money.<\/strong> You can avoid making the mistakes they have already\u00a0made and be guided in finding the strategy, systems and procedures that best apply to your\u00a0vision.<\/p>\n

A business coach<\/strong> will get you to think through your priorities, check your self motivation and\u00a0get you into action.<\/strong> There is an advantage over a mentor in that it is your business so you will\u00a0be more enthusiastic to put your ideas into effect than those of someone else.<\/p>\n

A Business Angel<\/strong> or a Venture Capital<\/strong> organization may be required for more costly\u00a0undertakings.<\/p>\n

Finally there is the \u201csense of contribution\u201d!<\/strong>\u00a0It is more than contributing to the national economy, paying taxes and creating employment.<\/p>\n

The strongest motivating factor<\/strong> should be that you are performing a unique service of\u00a0exceptional quality that really brings benefit to others.<\/strong> A modern, well organized company that\u00a0makes profits, can also significantly impact social causes and bring some relief to those really\u00a0in need.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
