I\u2019ve just received an e-mail from a friend.<\/p>\n

It said \u2018Great, see you on Tuesday! Do you prefer to meet in your office or mine?\u2019<\/p>\n

It would be perfectly all right if this was not the reply to my mail that said: \u2018Since I\u2019ll be in your neighborhood, I\u2019ll\u00a0see you in your office on Tuesday!\u2019<\/p>\n

If we fail in basic things like this, I wonder how much of what we say really gets to the person who we are\u00a0communicating with\u2026<\/p>\n

Studies say that in live communication<\/strong> (I mean face to face) the actual words only account for 7% of the\u00a0meaning\u2026
\nAnother 25% is also verbal,<\/strong> things like tone of voice, rhythm, pitch, pauses, etc.
\nA whopping 2\/3 is non-verbal communication!<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been fascinated by this topic and three years ago I joined Toastmasters<\/strong> to improve my communication\u00a0skills.
\nIt has been both a lab and a gym for me \u2013 a lab to experiment on different combinations of all the ingredients,<\/strong> and\u00a0a gym to exercise each of the verbal and non-verbal \u2018muscles\u2019.<\/strong>
\nThe evaluator\u2019s feedback, complemented by the audience feedback and their reaction as I\u2019m speaking, have\u00a0given me valuable lessons.<\/p>\n

The biggest mistake someone with a Trainer\u2019s Certification can make is to assume they can communicate\u2026
\nSure, that can speak \u2018at\u2019 people, but how many really communicate?\u00a0How much of what they say really sticks for longer than a moon cycle?<\/p>\n

Is it enough if you really want to make a difference in people\u2019s lives?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And what about communicating in<\/strong> writing?<\/strong>
\nHow can we compete with the distractions the readers are subject to<\/strong> and make it interesting for them?<\/p>\n

The first thing is to \u2018talk\u2019 to them and the second is to tell them a story\u2026<\/strong>
\nThen play two different roles \u2013 the writer and the reader.
\nDon\u2019t \u2018tell\u2019<\/strong> them what you think they should read, \u2018speak\u2019<\/strong> to them in their words, to their hearts, so that they feel\u00a0you understand them. Only when they like and trust you will you be in a position to help them and really make a\u00a0difference in their lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n
