{"id":814,"date":"2013-04-20T18:52:52","date_gmt":"2013-04-20T18:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/home\/?p=814"},"modified":"2013-04-20T18:52:52","modified_gmt":"2013-04-20T18:52:52","slug":"goals-and-plans-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/home\/goals-and-plans-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Goals and Plans (Part 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Many people don\u2019t connect goals and plans.<\/strong><br \/>\nThey either set goals and fail to make the plans on how to reach the goals, or they make plans without\u00a0having goals that are clearly defined.<\/p>\n<p>Definitions of goal (excluding sports) include \u201cthe object of a person\u2019s ambition or effort\u201d, \u201cthe destination\u00a0of a journey\u201d and \u201cthe result or achievement toward which effort is directed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A Goal is more than just a dream. More than something we have a desire for and put out into the universe\u00a0in the hope that it may come true.<br \/>\nGoals need to be front of mind and worked upon with effort.<\/p>\n<p>In order to reach goals the acronym<strong> S.M.A.R.T.<\/strong> was invented.\u00a0The first use of which is attributed to George T. Doran in the November 1981 issue of Management Review.\u00a0The letters usually refer to the words:<br \/>\n<strong>Specific<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Measurable<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Attainable<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Relevant<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Time-sensitive<\/strong><br \/>\nalthough many variations exist.<br \/>\nI personal prefer action-based and realistic instead of attainable and relevant.<br \/>\nGetting people \u201cinto action\u201d is an integral part of coaching, while attainable feels too soft, doesn\u2019t imply\u00a0any level of effort to achieve it, so is better replaced with realistic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/goals.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-815\" alt=\"goals\" src=\"http:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/goals-300x243.png\" width=\"210\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/goals-300x243.png 300w, https:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/goals.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are other considerations when setting and working towards goals.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always include others in setting goals if it is going to need a team effort. This is to ensure the team\u00a0\u201cown\u201d the goal and are committed to achieving it.<\/li>\n<li>Writing goals down takes them from being just an idea to being something we are likely to look at\u00a0again, hence remember, and be more front of mind.<\/li>\n<li>Working on too many goals at once will make it harder to achieve them since focus may be lost, so\u00a0goals need to be prioritized.<\/li>\n<li>Some people argue that goals should be kept simple but B.H.A.G.s (Big Hairy Audacious Goals\u00a0from \u2018Built to Last\u2019 by James Collins and Jerry Porras) are long term, complex but far more inspiring.<\/li>\n<li>B.H.A.G.s need to be broken down into sub goals that are more manageable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Taking a goal to the next level and working to achieve it requires a plan.
