{"id":832,"date":"2013-05-10T00:35:53","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T00:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/home\/?p=832"},"modified":"2013-05-10T00:35:53","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T00:35:53","slug":"is-iq-over-rated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/home\/is-iq-over-rated\/","title":{"rendered":"Is IQ over-rated?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I was at University the whole class took a test to evaluate our IQ as part of a study to <strong>assess if there was a\u00a0relationship between our IQs and our grades.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In my case (you will soon see why this is not bragging) I had the highest IQ in the class and I graduated with the\u00a0second highest scoring in the year.<br \/>\nHowever for a lot of the other students the <strong>correlation was not so direct.<\/strong><br \/>\nI remember thinking it was because some did not bother studying much and others spent their lives with their\u00a0nose in the books but as years went by I realized that IQ was not at all an indicator of people\u2019s success!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IQ.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-833\" alt=\"IQ\" src=\"http:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IQ-300x225.png\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IQ-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.success-academy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IQ.png 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later I realized that <strong>emotional intelligence was as important to the person\u2019s success, if not more!<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you can identify, assess and use in your favor your emotions and the emotions of those around you, you stand a\u00a0better chance of being an effective leader and of achieving the goals you set out to achieve in your life.<\/p>\n<p>When dealing with everyday situations in our jobs we have to understand that our IQs can be severely\u00a0undermined by our inability to manage our emotions properly. And since our emotions are subject to\u00a0fluctuations, <strong>we need to develop strategies that allow us to stay in charge of them as best we can.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Emotional awareness, or our ability to recognize emotions like anger, sadness, fear or joy when they appear, will\u00a0help us understand our reactions and why sometimes other people seem to rub us the wrong way.<br \/>\n<strong>Emotional self-management will then allow us to control our emotions or express them in a more appropriate\u00a0manner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we begin to master emotional awareness and emotional self-management \u2013 and yes, these are learnable skills\u00a0&#8211; it will become easier to recognize them in other people and create empathy.<br \/>\nIt is important to <strong>be aware of what other people think and feel<\/strong> if we want to keep them engaged and our social\u00a0skills are invaluable in managing relationships and moving other people in the desired direction.<\/p>\n<p>By developing our emotional intelligence we will be better at <strong>real-world problem-solving<\/strong> because emotions will\u00a0not cloud the issues. It is not about increasing IQ, but rather about allowing your existing IQ to shine through\u00a0under more and more testing circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Not controlling the initial emotional response to a given stimulus may render the highest IQ effectively worthless.<br \/>\nThe secret is to <strong>create a better relationship between the emotional brain and the thinking brain.<\/strong><br \/>\nLearning not to react aggressively towards other people will benefit all and eventually they will learn by default\u00a0that emotions can be controlled, and may be inspired to improve their own emotional responses as a result.<\/p>\n<p>So would you rather be someone who is <strong>supremely intelligent, but who leads a chaotic and unfulfilled live\u00a0because you are unable to set aside your emotional reactions<\/strong> or be <strong>\u201cstreetwise\u201d and have the social skills to\u00a0cooperate and work in a team with minimal amount of stress?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I was at University the whole class took a test to evaluate our IQ as part of a study to assess if there was a\u00a0relationship between our IQs and our grades.
